Mike Latimer is an artist who uses high-voltage electricity to create one-of-a-kind fractal burns in wood.  Mike creates distinctive and stunning charcuterie boards, cutting boards, trays, wall art, and unique commissioned pieces. Each creation has a unique fractal burn filled with resin and is sanded to a high polish finish.

The process starts with selecting a piece of wood, some of his favourites include Maple, Walnut, and African Sapele.  Then he must decide the purpose of each piece.  Does it look like a good charcuterie board, or would it look better on a wall?
Once the design plan is established, he cuts out the size and shape he wants to use for each unique piece, and then the boards are sanded with 1200-grit sandpaper before being burnt.

We can't describe the process used for these fractal burns for safety reasons because the whole procedure is inherently dangerous.  The Ontario Electrical Standards Association has issued safety warnings that state, "These generators are extremely dangerous.  They contain live, accessible wiring components and are unsafe for any use or handling.  Both homemade and pre-built generators are considered to have the potential to seriously injure and/or kill the user."

Once the board is burned and cleaned up, and further sanded to 3000-grit, he chooses the colour of resin and proceeds with the mixing and pouring.  Then the long process of sanding these boards to a fine 5000-grit polish begins.  The last step is applying food-grade oil to all of the charcuterie and cutting boards.

The artist is always delighted to work with a customer on commissioned pieces too.  For example, he's done canoe paddles, axe handles, beer paddles, and walking sticks!   You can even customize a board by choosing a specific wood, and your favourite colour of resin, even the shape and handle can be customized!
